Kolukkumalai – A Hidden Paradise

Sprawling tea plantations, green mountain tops, and white roof top of a tea factory. That’s my view from the Kollukumalai Mountain Hut. After a bone rattling jeep ride, when you get to see this view with a hot cup of tea and spicy pakoras in your hand, you know your holiday is off to a great start.

I came across kollukumalai tea estate when I was looking for a quick break from my daily routine. Kollukumali  is a small hamlet in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is the home to the highest organically grown orthodox tea plantation in the world.  Travelers generally make it a day trip from Munnar due to its proximity to the town. But the best way to experience the serenity of this place is to stay here.

Kollukumalai Mountain hut is the only guest house available for guests to stay. Their service and the caretaker Lal’s hospitality is unparalleled.

After a good night’s rest catch the sunrise at the nearby spot. An early start is highly recommended to get the best of this.

The guest house can arrange treks to the famous Meesapulimala with a local guide.

If you are not in the adventurous mood and want to just relax, take leisurely strolls in the tea estate. Visit the factory and learn the orthodox tea making process. Finish your tour with a cup of tea from the attached shop.
